No Pain, No Gain This past Wednesday found me with blistered palms, swollen shoulders, throbbing arms, and various bruises that colorfully decorated my 5 4 frame. It would be somewhat forgivable if these minor wounds were a result of someone elses stupidity or unforeseeable circumstances; unfortunately, these injuries were pretty much my own fault. Because my EMT-B state exam is coming up in just over a week, Ive spent the past few days cycling between an absurd sense of calm and an overwhelming sense of panic. Ive forgotten so much of what I learned in the EMT class I took over IAP, and I havent had a whole lot of experience on shift. The latter, though, might actually be a good thing, since as I discovered earlier this week Im not that great at working the stretcher when anyone more than, say, 10 pounds is on it. So basically, thats everyone minus newborn infants. Yay. As you can imagine, an EMT that cant handle a stretcher with someone on it isnt all that useful. Channeling the spirit of practice makes perfect, I e-mailed a few of the crew chiefs on duty this last week, asking if I could come in and tinker with the stretchers a little bit. And thus were born the scratches, the soreness, and the wary suspicion that biceps and triceps might need to be a larger part of my life asap!! I was slightly jealous of the other members of my EMT class, none of whom seemed to have any trouble lifting people on the stretcher. For me, every moment was a struggle, and my mind juggled with constant reminders: Place your feet properly! Lift with your legs, not your back! Pull the trigger! Dont let the wheels drop! Communicate with your partner! Ahhh, brain overloaddd. It was certainly a learning experience. On some level, Im grateful that this happened, since Im now aware of the limits of my strength and the techniques I need to work on. Im also now fully aware that MIT EMTs are some of the kindest people around close to ten people encouraged me, helped me, and stuck by me as I fumbled my way into a modicum of stretcher grace. A special thanks to Vidya 12, who came in when she wasnt even on shift to bravely be my patient and to further my ambulance-related education :) Also a thanks to all of you EA Admits who participated in the event last night. What and where did you study as an undergraduate? Do you hold any other degrees? Jenna: I am originally from Seoul (Gangnam), S. Korea, but was educated and worked mostly in the U.S. I studied engineering in undergrad. Before returning to b-school, I also studied economics and accounting at Harvard. Accepted: What year are you in your MBA studies? Jenna: 2.5 year – I began my Stern MBA as a part-time student under employer sponsorship (weekend commutes between Boston and NYC); eventually, I relocated to New York and took courses on a full-time basis. (Note: you cannot formally join the full-time core but can accelerate progress in special circumstances with permission.) Accepted: Why did you choose NYU Stern? Which other programs had you considered? Jenna: It was one of the few part-time programs offered by top business schools and within a commute distance from Boston. I also considered Chicago Booth, but the commute option was limited (flight only). Accepted: Are you currently working? How do you juggle your job with school obligations (not to mention other obligations)? Jenna: I finished my coursework in February and am working full-time for TechStars, a premier seed stage Venture Capital/Accelerator. I help our portfolios companies in all facets of early stage company building – strategy, branding, investor pitch, customer acquisition, market research, hiring,  and connecting with investors/domain experts/business partners. Accepted: Can you share some application tips for our NYU Stern applicants (or applicants in general)? Jenna: Plan ahead – Know where you stand against competition and build additional credentials or experience as necessary. Get the GMAT out of your way ASAP. Reflect deeply on why you want to pursue an MBA, now, and at [Stern]. Your answers should be very specific and personal. The Mexican Revolution The Mexican Revolution was the culmination of a mass of political, economic, and social tension that accompanied the regime of the dictator Porfirio Diaz. The Revolution began with the aims to overthrow Diaz, but the Revolution had a pronounced effect on the organization of Mexicos government, economy, and society. Porfirio Diaz was the president of Mexico when the Revolution broke out. He was elected in 1877, and although he swore to step down in 1880, he continued to be reelected until 1910. He claimed that he was justified in this because he brought stability to Mexico. However, this was hardly the case. Madero promptly fled to San Antonio, Texas to plan a revolution. There he wrote the Plan of St. Luis Potosi, which said that the election was fraudulent and that he was the provisional president of Mexico. The plan was purely political and Madero planned to have a completely democratic government. The plan said nothing about changing the situation for farmers and peasants. However, rural peasants latched onto the plan, thinking that Madero would also reform the country economically and socially . There were many revolutions carried out under Maderos flag, specifically revolutions carried out by Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata. Different groups had very different goals for what the Mexican revolution would accomplish. The rural peasants and indigenous people wanted the land to be taken out of the hands of the aristocracy or the elite and have the land be evenly divided between the rural towns. They wanted the territory of their ancestors back because it had been stripped from them during the regime of Porfirio Diaz. They also wanted to be taken out of poverty and to have farming available to them again so that they could sustain their lives and work for their living.
